Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition that affects individuals who have experienced or witnessed traumatic events. Symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and emotional numbness, which can significantly impair an individual's ability to function in daily life (Yusuf et al., 2024). Traditional therapeutic approaches for PTSD often include psychotherapy, medication, and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). However, recent studies have highlighted the potential of family therapy in facilitating recovery by improving family dynamics and offering emotional support (Adeyemi & Tade, 2023).
Family therapy involves the active participation of family members in the therapeutic process, providing a supportive environment where patients can share their experiences and receive validation. Research has shown that involving families in the treatment of PTSD not only enhances emotional support but also helps in addressing relational stressors that may exacerbate the condition (Hassan et al., 2024).
In Gombe State, PTSD is a growing concern, particularly among individuals who have experienced violence, armed conflicts, and other traumatic events. Despite the availability of mental health care at the Federal Teaching Hospital, there is limited exploration of the role family therapy plays in the recovery process of PTSD patients. This study seeks to assess how family therapy contributes to the healing and recovery of PTSD patients at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State.
The recovery process for patients with PTSD can be prolonged and challenging, with many individuals experiencing relapses or exacerbations of symptoms. While individual therapies are commonly used, the potential benefits of family therapy in supporting PTSD recovery are not fully explored in the Nigerian context (Olabisi et al., 2023).
At the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State, many PTSD patients experience ongoing difficulties due to strained family relationships, social stigma, and the lack of cohesive family support. These factors can hinder the recovery process, resulting in prolonged suffering for the patient and their family. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the impact of family therapy on the recovery of PTSD patients.
This study focuses on PTSD patients receiving family therapy at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe State. It examines the psychological effects of family involvement in the treatment of PTSD. Limitations include potential biases due to self-reporting and variability in family participation across patients.
